Summer Internships

The best way to gain experience in your field is to get a summer internship. There are opportunities at many types of institutions and many are paid; and may even include room and board stipends. Universities are a major source of these positions. University programs include prestigious REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) as well as funding through other sources such as grants. Pharmaceutical and Biotech companies also have summer research opportunities working on active projects within the company. Other places to look for internship opportunities include hospitals, doctor offices, and small research based companies. Frequently, these opportunities will require that you 'create' your own internship by volunteering.
